Whats New? - February 2025

This month, we'll be looking at Shopify's new GraphQL Product API release, support for up to 2,048 variants, and what this change means for Report Toaster.

Let's take a look!

2,048 Variants

In case you missed it, Shopify will soon be upping the limit on the number of variants per product from 100 to 2,048.

At time of writing, this change is scheduled to be rolled out in February 2025, with merchants on Shopify Plus being the first to have this option available (eventually, all Shopify plans will support this change).

What does this mean for Report Toaster?

As of November 2024, Report Toaster has been fully compatible with this API release.

This means that as soon as the increased variant limit is available for your store (and you start adding additional variants), you'll be able to see them in our app and report on them accordingly.

More Product Options

As part of this change, Shopify have changed the way they handle variant options (Option 1, Option 2, Option 3).

Before, there were only these three fields, and so any options you wanted (e.g. Color, Warehouse, Material, etc.) would all go in these columns.

This also means that if you want a product to have another option (e.g. Size), you'd have to put it in the same column as one of the others.

Which would be fine, except options weren't labelled (e.g. there was no title like "Size" or "Color" assigned to each), meaning there was no way to separate these out.

Now, Variant / Options exists. This contains all options together and, crucially, a name for each:

Which means that if you wanted us to create custom fields for your account (e.g. a column for Color, a column for Ships From, a column for Material, and a column for Size - giving you a total of four option columns on a report), you could.

Each product could of course only have three or four selected, but when looking across all your products it's much neater.

This is just one example of how the new system is much more flexible.

For those of you who are familiar with Line Item Properties / Note Attributes (which are stored in much the same way), this might give you some idea of the potential capabilities.

Until next time!
